What You Need to Know About the Cricket World Cup Coin

cricket coin 580 x360 (1) (1)

Picture a sport played with a bat and a ball on a field. You thought of baseball, right? Well, if you were from Australia, New Zealand, parts of Asia, England, South Africa, or many other countries around the world, chances are you would have thought of cricket. Right now, the eyes of the cricket world are focused Down Under for the Cricket World Cup — as well as the fabulous new coin that was issued commemorating the tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), along with the countries of Australia and New Zealand, are holding this year’s Cricket World Cup, which only happens every four years. The ICC 2015 Cricket World Cup features 49 matches in 14 different locations all over Australia and New Zealand. The final match of the Cricket World Cup will be held in Australia at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground

The ICC and the Australian Royal Mint have joined forces to create the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Coin. Much like last year’s National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin, the cricket coin is domed and silver. Fully utilizing the dome shape, the reverse side of the coin features the unique-looking cricket ball with its signature stitching. The obverse side of the coin depicts the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The inward curve of the coin helps accentuate the shape of the venue, bringing to mind the similarly designed French World Cup coin. A portrait of the British queen can be seen in the center of the obverse design.

Coins commemorating sporting events are always fun and exciting. But what makes the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Coin really special is its rarity. Only 5,000 of these will be minted, which means that the $5 one-ounce silver coins are certain to make some cricket lovers — and numismatists — very happy.
