How Much Is the U.S. Open Championship Trophy Worth?

U.S. Open Trophy

US OPEN TROPHY 580X360 (1)
Right now, legendary golfers like Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and many others are duking it out at the U.S. Open, which is being held — for the first time — at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place near Tacoma. Only one golfer will bring home the U.S. Open Championship Trophy, which makes it incredibly valuable in terms of pride and glory. But beyond its intrinsic value, how much is that trophy actually worth?

When it comes to precious metals, the U.S. Open Championship Trophy does well. It’s 18 inches tall, and stands on a 6” x 6” base. It’s made of sterling silver, which is .925 pure, and weighs 8.5 pounds. With silver currently priced at $16 a troy ounce, the value of the U.S. Open Championship Trophy is right around $1,975.44

While golfers may get the chance to take the famed trophy home, and even drink beer out of it, they don’t get to keep it forever. The year after they win, they hand the trophy over to the new champion, and go home with their own half-size replica to keep. The replica would potentially be worth around $987.72 in sterling silver. But the precious metal is only one very small component of the value of a trophy like this.

Sentimental value plays a huge role in the value of sports memorabilia. Things like who won the trophy, and the year in which the U.S. Open was being held could potentially have a huge impact on the trophy’s value. If famous underdog Phil Mickelson were to take home the trophy this year, it could increase its value for instance. And of course, a trophy won at our very own Chambers Bay Golf Course would have some serious value for local collectors.

So how much would we pay Rory McIlroy if he walked into Bellevue Rare Coins with one of his U.S. Open replica trophies? Well, we’d give him tens of thousands of dollars.
