THE 5 BEST WAYS TO AVOID COUNTERFEIT COINS

Sadly, counterfeits sometimes find a way into a collectors’ life, and the best way to avoid fake coins is to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible while also trusting your gut. Outside of that, we have compiled a short list of the best ways to avoid counterfeit coins.

  1. Avoid sellers from China

With fake coins on the uprise, especially in recent months, online shoppers are urged to avoid purchasing from sellers based in China. Many of the fake coins circulating over the internet have continuously been connected to sellers based in China.

  1. Know that size does matter

When purchasing a new coin for your collection, one should be aware of an authentic coins dimensions including weight, thickness, and diameter. If the numbers are not adding up, it’s best to begin trusting your gut and walk away from the potential counterfeit item.

  1. Never throw caution to the wind

If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Try your best to avoid being taken advantage by taking all details about the purchase into consideration. If the description isn’t matching the photo or the incredibly rare coin is priced far lower than what it should be, chances are it’s a fake.

  1. Get to know your dealer

Research the company you are about to do business with. How reputable are they? How long have they been in business? Are they affiliates of the American Numismatic Association or Professional Numismatists Guild and therefore are held rightfully accountable for the items they sell? These are all questions you should have the answers to before drop your hard earned cash on your next collector’s item.

  1. If you can, always buy certified coins

Buying certified coins will give you the piece of mind that you are getting exactly what you are paying for. You can also verify the certification number through third party graders such as PCGS or NGC before completing the purchase.
