THE STONE MARINER

rare gems and diamonds

March brings with it, slowly but surely, warmer weather, clearer skies and a celebration of new life as Spring begins to set in. Gone are the barren branches on the seasonal trees and small shoots of grass start to appear from the ground, along with the tulips and daffodils as they begin to bloom. In many areas of the world, this is also the time the seas begin to calm from the winter storms and those dark waters once again become an inviting life force. With that, it makes perfect sense as to why a gorgeous stone such as the aquamarine would be chosen to represent the month of March.

IMG_1713Aquamarine is a highly regarded stone by many as its versatile soft blue hue complements any skin tone and can bring a certain glimmer to any eye. The cool, soothing tone mimics that of calm waters as its name suggests, “aqua” meaning “water” in Latin and “mare” meaning “sea”. The stone holds vibrancy unparalleled by any other and it makes it easy to understand why it has held its popularity through the years.

A member of the beryl family and relative of the emerald, aquamarine has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale. This makes it fairly high when compared to others on the list of birthstones, which allows great durability and decreases the risk of scratching.

The color itself, is typically more even when compared to the emerald, making the blue hued cousin relatively free of inclusions. As with many other precious gemstones, the more intense the color is, the higher the value and aquamarine is no exception to the rule. IMG_1714

A favorite amongst jewelry designers, aquamarine can be traditionally or creatively cut and placed into any setting. Polished or left rough, the stone never seems to be lacking when the final product is presented.
