Spring is here! Daylight lasts longer and longer. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming all around us. Our neighbors to the north in Canada enjoy many of the same beautiful spring flowers that we do. Perhaps that’s why Canada has minted so many beautiful coins with designs based on spring-blooming flowers. In honor of spring’s floral bounty, here are six Canadian coins featuring spring flowers.
50c 2002 Silver Coin — Golden Tulip
One of the favorite spring flowers here in the Northwest is the tulip. We even have our own Tulip Festival up in Skagit County. Well, it looks like us aren’t the only tulip-loving bunch! The 2002 Golden Tulip coin was minted in honor of the Canadian Tulip Festival, which is held in Ottawa every May. The coin is made of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper, and weighs 9.3 grams.

Every year, as winter ends and spring begins, a friendly-looking flower emerges from the earth. The daffodil blooming is one of the first signs of spring in the Pacific Northwest. The Royal Canadian Mint paid homage to this early spring flower with a coin. Like the Golden Tulip, this coin is 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper, and weighs 9.3 grams.

Easter brings to mind new life. Bunnies, eggs, and of course, freshly blooming flowers are all staples of the holiday. So it’s only fitting that a coin honoring the Easter Lily is on this list. When it comes to spring flowers, the iris is sometimes overlooked. But it’s not forgotten. This blue and yellow flower is as unique as it is gorgeous. Canada honored this floral gem with its own coin. The colored coin features a picture of the tri-petal iris, along with three corresponding Swarovski crystal dewdrops on each petal. The coin is 99.999% silver, and weighs 1.11oz.
