Six Floral Coins to Celebrate Spring

Spring is here! Daylight lasts longer and longer. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming all around us. Our neighbors to the north in Canada enjoy many of the same beautiful spring flowers that we do. Perhaps that’s why Canada has minted so many beautiful coins with designs based on spring-blooming flowers. In honor of spring’s floral bounty, here are six Canadian coins featuring spring flowers.

50c 2002 Silver Coin — Golden Tulip
One of the favorite spring flowers here in the Northwest is the tulip. We even have our own Tulip Festival up in Skagit County. Well, it looks like us aren’t the only tulip-loving bunch! The 2002 Golden Tulip coin was minted in honor of the Canadian Tulip Festival, which is held in Ottawa every May. The coin is made of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper, and weighs 9.3 grams.

50c 2003 Silver Coin — Golden Daffodil
Every year, as winter ends and spring begins, a friendly-looking flower emerges from the earth. The daffodil blooming is one of the first signs of spring in the Pacific Northwest. The Royal Canadian Mint paid homage to this early spring flower with a coin. Like the Golden Tulip, this coin is 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper, and weighs 9.3 grams.

50c 2004 Silver Coin — Easter Lily
Easter brings to mind new life. Bunnies, eggs, and of course, freshly blooming flowers are all staples of the holiday. So it’s only fitting that a coin honoring the Easter Lily is on this list. Like both the Golden Tulip and the Golden Daffodil, the Easter Lily coin is made of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper, and weighs 9.3 grams.

$350 2010 Gold Coin — Prairie Crocus
One of the first signs of spring, often before it technically arrives, is the crocus. In the Canadian prairies of Manitoba, the crocus is the very first plant to bloom. Nature enthusiasts are crazy about the crocus, because it is the first sign that spring has arrived. This heavy-hitting coin is made of 99.999% gold, and weighs 1.235oz.

$20 2011 Silver Coin — Tulip with Venetian Glass Ladybug
Flowers aren’t the only sign of spring. We have the birds, and, well, the bugs! And the ladybug is perhaps the friendliest bug of all. This coin features a tulip along with a beautiful little Venetian glass ladybug that sits atop the surface, making the design three-dimensional. This 99.999% silver coin weighs in at 1.11oz.

$20 2013 Silver Coin — Blue Flag Iris
When it comes to spring flowers, the iris is sometimes overlooked. But it’s not forgotten. This blue and yellow flower is as unique as it is gorgeous. Canada honored this floral gem with its own coin. The colored coin features a picture of the tri-petal iris, along with three corresponding Swarovski crystal dewdrops on each petal. The coin is 99.999% silver, and weighs 1.11oz.
