Ruby: Beauty, Passion and Wealth

Ruby rings and Jewelry

Ruby rings

Representative of love, health and fortune, Julys birthstone the ruby is one of the most striking of the precious stones that make up the lot. Though natural rubies vary in color, ranging from deep red to raspberry and pink (most commonly referred to as “pink sapphires”), the most sought after and highly valued is the “pigeons blood” color. Named as such for the likeness of an albino pigeons eye. The richest of the red, these pigeons blood rubies command the highest per carat market value because of their beauty.

Many of these stones were originally mined in Myanmar but today there are numerous prevalent mines scattered all over the world including the United States, South America, Africa, and a small mine in Europe. Most recently a sizeable quantity was located in Greenland with the receding of an ice shelf.  While some may believe that origin influences price, it is important to remember that, much like diamonds, clarity, carat and cut are still the biggest factors of what one should pay.

Buyers should use caution when in the market for these vibrant gemstones however. Around 1970 it was discovered that many “Geneva” rubies were placed into circulation, posing as natural stones only to discover they were actually manmade. The lost cost of a “flawless ruby” sparked inquiry for one such buyer and the appraiser confirmed the factory made stone. Not to say that these manmade stones have a differing chemical compound but as with many things in the world today, natural is typically the best option. If you suspect a particular deal is too good to be true, have the seller place the details in writing and have the stone appraised by an unbiased third party appraiser.

Rubies can be beautifully displayed in any setting and being as they are a 9 on the Mohs scale, can be worn on a daily basis. The most popular way of displaying the rich reds is to place it in yellow gold. The contrast allows the red hue to be drawn out by the yellow properties, making for an aesthetically richer stone. While this is considered to be the most popular and traditional appearance, platinum and white gold are just as gorgeous and prevalent.  Arrangements of stones can be set in any number of ways allowing the customer to be as creative as possible with their custom designs and the wearer to be adorn in a most cherisable fashion.
