Gold American $20 Saint-Gaudens

The sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was hand-picked by President Theodore Roosevelt to design this coin, later dubbed the “double eagle.” After the phrase “In God We Trust” was omitted from the first minting in 1908, the coin was not well received, so Congress passed a law requiring the phrase be added on all United States coinage. In the middle of 1908, the United States Mint halted production of “No Motto” Saint-Gaudens, and “In God We Trust” was added on the reverse just below the flying eagle.
