WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT CLEAN THAT TARNISHED COIN

For many newcomers to the world of numismatics, tarnished coins may appear ugly, dirty, and worth a whole lot of nothing. As we have all learned over the course of our lifetime, appearances are not everything.

Tarnished coins have created their own distinct niche, which collectors love to expand on. The reason for this being is that naturally tarnished coins show their real age. Much like a sommelier indulging and grading wine, more often than not the well aged, uncorked wine will win the most points when compared to the recently bottled. So while one may believe it’s better to clean up that seemingly filthy, chocolate brown penny or the now rainbow tinted silver coin before listing it for sale, think again. That tarnish is actually increasing the coins’ value.

However, it should not go without saying that one should not purposely tarnish any coin they have sitting around in their collection. Tarnish only increases the value within the market of tarnished coins if the coin and its tarnish are age appropriate; an important point to keep in mind when buying or selling these types of pieces.

Additionally, it is quite easy to spot a coin that was once tarnished and has been cleaned. Often, a recently scrubbed penny will have an orange hue and silver coins will possess a grayish silver, uncharacteristic of both types metals. There are often blotches throughout the coins’ surface, which would otherwise not exist. All these “tamperings” will only lead to the decreased value of the coin itself when compared to a coin that was left to age and tarnish naturally.
